Introduction

Fort construction and flags, patterned wildlife, mountain trail elevation; national, state, and local state parks offer a plethora of math experiences-Math Adventures.

Lunch packed, we drove to a local historical park for a noontime picnic. Upon arriving, a sprawling oak begged us to spread a blanket in the shade of its hanging moss. As we spread the blanket, one little learner noticed a rectangular “NO PARKING” sign one hundred yards to our left. His observation led to an impromptu shape hunt. In no time, three little learners darted off, hunting for other shapes. The middle school learner asked to begin lunch so she could eat while reading her chapter book, her picnic companion.

When hungry shape hunters returned, they ate and requested to walk along the boardwalk nature trail. Along our journey, we counted, compared, and discovered, following parallel railings around corners. Our greatest discovery lay in the symmetry and pattern of an orb spider web!  We stood amazed, admiring the geometric uniqueness of the spider’s creation. Simply captivating! Nature and math go hand-in-hand. God designed it that way!

Math Adventures: Experiencing Math in Parks provides purposeful math lessons specifically designed for early learning. Each concept includes multi-sensory experiences, oral drill, and life application; opportunities to observe, verbalize, count, add and subtract the objects and information children encounter. Imagine the Math Adventures outside, in parks. Adventure, discovery, and wonder await your learners.

With you on your next math adventure,
